Your Android phone or tablet is the quickest place to start with Waka TV: install the app, log in, and you can be watching live TV, movies and series in a few minutes. This guide covers the Waka TV app download for Android step by step, with the exact settings for the most common phone brands in South Africa — Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and more.

If you're setting up a TV instead, see our guide to Waka TV on Android TV.

What your phone needs first

Before the Waka TV app download for Android, check three things:

  • Storage. Keep at least 150 MB free for the download and the installed app. If your phone is nearly full, clear out old WhatsApp videos first.
  • A Wi-Fi connection (ideally). The app is about 47 MB, so it's worth downloading on Wi-Fi rather than eating into your mobile data.
  • Your login details. Find the WhatsApp message with your Waka TV username and password, or ask us for a free trial if you're just testing.

A Google account is only needed if you're installing from the Play Store; the APK route works without one.

If your phone has Google Play, use it — it's the simplest Waka TV app download for Android and keeps the app updated for you.

Option 1: Waka TV app download for Android from Google Play

  1. Open the Play Store on your phone or tablet.
  2. Search for Zest Player IBO — that's the name the Waka TV app is listed under — or tap the Get it on Google Play button on our download page.
  3. Tap Install and wait for it to finish.
  4. Tap Open.
  5. Enter the login details we sent you on WhatsApp.

That's it. Your channels, movies and series load, and the app updates itself from now on.

Option 2: Waka TV app download for Android with the APK

Use this if your phone doesn't have Google Play — most newer Huawei phones — or the Play Store says the app isn't available on your device.

  1. Open your phone's browser and go to our download page.
  2. Tap Download APK (the file is about 47 MB — Wi-Fi recommended).
  3. Open the downloaded file from your notifications or the Files app.
  4. When Android blocks the install, follow the prompt to allow this source (see the brand-by-brand steps below).
  5. Tap Install, then Open, and log in.

"Install unknown apps" by phone brand

Every Android brand words this setting slightly differently. If the prompt doesn't take you there automatically, here's where to look:

Samsung Galaxy

Settings → Apps → ⋮ (menu) → Special access → Install unknown apps → choose your browser or My Files → switch on Allow from this source.

Huawei and Honor

Settings → Security → More settings → Install apps from external sources → choose your browser or Files → switch it on. Huawei's own App Gallery doesn't carry the Waka TV app, so the APK is the way to go.

Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO

Settings → Apps → Manage apps → choose your browser or File Manager → Install unknown apps → switch on. Xiaomi phones may show a security scan before installing; let it finish, then continue.

Oppo, Realme and Vivo

Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps (on some models: Settings → Privacy → Install unknown apps) → choose your browser → allow.

Nokia, Motorola and other "stock" Android phones

Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps → choose your browser → Allow from this source.

You only need to do this once, and only for the app you used to download the file.

Google Play Protect warnings

If you install with the APK, Google Play Protect may show a message such as "Unsafe app blocked" or ask whether to scan the app. That's Play Protect being cautious about any app installed from outside the Play Store. If you downloaded the file from our official download page, choose More details → Install anyway, or let it scan and continue. Never accept that prompt for an APK from a site you don't trust — see why in our post on APKPure and Uptodown.

After installing: setting the app up on your phone

  • Log in with the username and password from WhatsApp — copy and paste them to avoid typos.
  • Rotate your phone to landscape for the full-screen player.
  • Add favourites from the Live screen so your regular channels are always at the top.
  • Lock categories you don't want children to see, using the app's parental controls.
  • Check your expiry date on the home screen, so you know when to renew.

Moving Waka TV to a new phone

Got a new phone? There's nothing to transfer. Do the Waka TV app download for Android again on the new phone, log in with the same details, and your account is exactly as you left it — your package, expiry date and channel line-up all live on your account, not on the old handset.

Favourites and locked categories are saved in the app on each device, so you may need to set those up again. If you're giving the old phone away, uninstall the app first so nobody else can use your login.

Android tablets

The Waka TV app for Android works the same way on tablets — Samsung Galaxy Tab, Lenovo, Huawei MatePad and others. A tablet's bigger screen makes it a great second TV for the kitchen or a child's room. Just remember that each screen watching at the same time counts towards your package: watching on the TV and a tablet together needs a 2-screen family package.
